Jerome leads a great team of people in the tax practice at Harper Hofer & Associates.
Midway through his college education he completed an internship that solidified for him that the tax realm was the way to go for his accounting career. Auditing the past and looking for past errors didn’t enthuse Jerome as much as looking and planning for the future to determine how to handle current and future tax issues.
Prior to beginning his professional accounting career, Jerome served 4 years in the Army, which allowed him to see a little of the world. After serving, he then pursued his master’s degree in accounting. Jerome’s professional accounting career began with Coopers and Lybrand (now PwC). Fortunately, it began with a smaller office that worked more with closely held businesses, high net worth individuals, and multi-generational family wealth planning rather than large corporations. From there, he transitioned to a larger office with Coopers where he gained experience working on larger U.S. and international clients. Jerome left Coopers and worked a few years for an international mining company, in their tax group, before coming back into public accounting. He worked with a local firm, Shenkin Kurtz Baker (SKB), that was then acquired by the national firm, CBIZ/Mayer Hoffman McCann (CBIZ), before leaving to join Harper Hofer. This brought him back to his favorite work of tax for closely held businesses, their owners and families, as well as high net worth individuals (and some of the people he had worked with at SKB and CBIZ).
The majority of Jerome’s time is spent working on real estate issues for his clients in commercial, residential and mixed-use projects as well as their individual and family tax matters. This includes his family’s residential real estate business as well. The remainder of his practice is with service providers, such as doctors, lawyers, etc., individuals, and family tax matters.
Outside of the office, Jerome enjoys time with his wife, kids, and grandkids. He loves being in Colorado and all the great outdoor opportunities it provides, which he tries to take advantage of as much as possible whether it is on two feet, two wheels (both motorized and non-motorized), or four wheels. Frequent trips back to South Dakota to visit extended family are always great. With kids and grandkids living out of state, Jerome and his wife travel as much as possible for their events as well.
